Bearing is basically a device that is used in most industries. It allows relative motion between two parts, typically rotation or linear movement. Bearings can be broadly classified into the following categories: - Motions
- Principle of operation
- Directions of applied loads
One of the most common bearings used in industries is Low friction bearings. It is used for improving efficiency, reduce wear and high speeds. The shape, material and fluid between surfaces are the three main elements responsible for reducing friction by bearing. You can use all these combinations within the same bearing also.
When we use sphere or rollers along with bearing it helps in reducing the friction to a great extent. Today, you'll find varied forms of materials used for bearing materials. Lubricant or pressurized are the two medium applied in bearings to keep the two solid parts from touching each other.
The six main principles used in bearing are:
- Sliding bearings also know as bushings or journal bearings.
- Rolling-element bearings like roller bearings and ball.
- Jewel bearings is used to carry the load by rolling the axle slightly off-center.
- Fluid bearings is used to carry load via gas or liquid.
- Magnetic bearings as the name suggests, the load is carried by magnetic fields.
- Flexure bearings supports load which bends.
