The term micro switch is used to refer to a very small electric switch, that is why the name is micro, that has the power to be actuated by very little physical force. The switches are used very commonly in houses and offices and it is due to the fact that they are available at a very low cost and at the same time, they have extremely high durability. You won't believe but they are normally greater than 1 million cycles and up to 10 million cycles for heavy duty models.
As far as the durability factor is concerned, it is all due the unique design of these microswitches that makes them so durable. Common applications of micro switches are computer mouse buttons and arcade game joysticks and buttons that are used at a very general level.
Let us go back in history. It is known that the very first micro switch was invented by Peter McGall in the year 1932 in Freeport, Illinois. He is known as the god of microswitches. As far as his life background is concerned, he used to work in the Burgess Battery Company at the time. Then it was in the year 1937, when Peter started his own company and gave it the name Microswitch, and the best part is that the company still exists as of 2008.
