Software as we all know is a collection of computer programs and procedures that perform certain tasks on an operating system. Software includes programs, video games etc. that are coded by programming languages like C, C++, etc.

The term includes:

• Application software such as the widely used word processors. Other examples include- business software, computer games, databases, educational software, etc. Businesses are probably the biggest users of application software, but almost every field of human activity today uses some form of application software.
• User Written software which is tailor-made according to the users' specific needs. User software includes spreadsheet templates, simulations, and scripts for graphics and animations.
• Firmware which includes programs that help in the functioning of various electronic devices. Examples include remote controls, calculators, devices like harddisks, keyboards, memory cards, mobile phones, digital cameras, etc.
• Middleware which controls and co-ordinates distributed systems.
• System software such as operating systems, which interface between hardware and user.
• Testware which is an umbrella term for all utilities and application software which are used for testing a software package
